CHICAGO — 11-Time Convicted Felon Sentenced to 68 Years for Red Line Shooting

Pierre Garrett, 37, has been sentenced to 68 years in prison after being convicted for shooting a man during a robbery on the Red Line in July 2022.

The incident occurred on July 8, 2022, around 5:46 p.m. at the 69th Street Red Line platform. According to CTA surveillance footage, Garrett confronted the victim, displaying a gun and demanding, “Give me everything.” As the victim began emptying his pockets, he produced a knife and slashed Garrett’s face. In response, Garrett shot the victim once in each shoulder, then took the victim’s phone and backpack.

Despite being shot, the victim managed to fight back and regain control of his backpack. A witness who saw the incident followed Garrett and helped lead Chicago police to his location. Garrett was found lying in a gangway, with a significant cut on his face.

In December 2023, a jury convicted Garrett on charges of discharging a firearm during an armed robbery, armed habitual criminal, and aggravated battery. This week, Judge Charles Burns sentenced him to 15 years for the robbery, with a 25-year enhancement for personally shooting the victim. He was also sentenced to 28 years for aggravated battery, with the armed habitual criminal charge merged into the other sentences. All sentences will be served consecutively.

Garrett’s lengthy criminal history includes previous convictions for robbery, retail theft, and fleeing from police, along with a 2020 DUI conviction in Missouri, where he was sentenced to probation.
