CHICAGO — Mother Charged with Murder in Drowning Death of 1-Year-Old Son

A 31-year-old woman has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly drowning her 1-year-old son in Lake Michigan, Chicago police announced Monday.

Surah Amon faces one felony count of first-degree murder and another felony count related to the strong probability of death, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Authorities responded to the 7000 block of S. South Shore Drive around 9:45 p.m. Friday, where they found Amon in the water. Media outlets, including CBS News Chicago and WLS, reported that the Chicago Fire Department’s Marine Unit rescued the child from the lake, but he was later pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital.

Court documents revealed Amon allegedly told police she wanted to die, suggesting a possible motive behind the tragic incident.

Amon remains in custody as the investigation continues.
