Chicago Robbery Suspect on Pretrial Release Accused of Killing Police Officer Inside Hospital Ambush

CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer is dead and another critically wounded after prosecutors say a robbery suspect who was already free on pretrial release carried out a deadly ambush inside a hospital while in police custody.

Authorities say 26-year-old Alphanso Talley had been arrested in connection to an armed robbery before being transported to Swedish Hospital for medical treatment after claiming he swallowed narcotics. While under police supervision, Talley was being prepared for a CT scan when prosecutors say he suddenly pulled a hidden handgun from beneath a blanket.

Investigators say Talley then opened fire on the officers escorting him, fatally shooting Officer John Bartholomew, a 10-year Chicago police veteran, and critically injuring another veteran officer.

After the shooting, Talley allegedly escaped through a hospital window, triggering a massive manhunt before officers captured him nearby.

Prosecutors revealed Talley had been out on pretrial release at the time of the deadly shooting, raising major concerns about violent repeat offenders remaining free despite serious criminal histories.

Authorities also say the firearm used in the ambush was illegally obtained through a straw purchase involving an Indiana woman now facing federal charges.

Officer Bartholomew’s death has sent shockwaves through Chicago law enforcement, with city leaders and fellow officers mourning the loss of a veteran described as deeply dedicated to protecting the public.

Talley now faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery, as the case moves forward.
