CHICAGO — Drive-By Shooting at Violent Intersection Injures Three Men

The intersection of Howard and Paulina, known for its high violence rate, witnessed another shooting on Saturday, February 17, at 5:20 p.m. A drive-by gunman opened fire on three men standing at the corner, hitting them at point-blank range. Remarkably, despite the close proximity and a crowded scene, all the victims survived, and no additional injuries were reported.

Surveillance footage captured the unsettling incident, showing a group of men loitering near a currency exchange and a man doing push-ups on the curb. As a gray sedan turned onto Paulina from Howard Street, a shooter inside the vehicle opened fire on the group. While most people ran for cover, one pedestrian continued walking calmly across the street, seemingly unaware of the danger.

According to Chicago Police Department (CPD), three men were injured: a 42-year-old with gunshots to the arm and hip, a 30-year-old shot in the hip and grazed on the hand, and a 35-year-old shot in the hand and chest. While the first two victims are in stable condition, the third is listed in critical condition.

This shooting follows a disturbing pattern from 2023, where 13 people were shot in the 1600 block of West Howard, with five of those incidents occurring on the corner of Howard and Paulina. The area has seen a surge in violence, partly blamed on the open-air drug market near the Howard CTA station.

Despite efforts by police to curb the violence, including several arrests for gun possession, the neighborhood remains a hotspot for shootings. The last shooting at this intersection occurred on October 23, 2023, until Saturday’s incident.

Local residents and business owners continue to call for more action to combat the violence in this troubled area.
