ATLANTA — A man is now facing murder charges after a deadly shootout at Atlantic Station sent crowds running and turned one of Atlanta’s busiest entertainment districts into a chaotic crime scene.
Police say the gunfire erupted during an altercation at the popular Midtown development, where large groups of people had gathered before the situation suddenly escalated into violence.
Investigators identified the suspect as 23-year-old Jacquez Heard, who was arrested in connection with the shooting death of 18-year-old Ronald Chappell Jr. Authorities say Chappell was killed during the exchange of gunfire at Atlantic Station.
Witnesses described hearing multiple shots ring out as people scattered through the shopping and entertainment area trying to escape the gunfire. Videos circulating online captured terrified bystanders running for cover while police rushed into the area.
Responding officers found Chappell suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported for emergency treatment but later died from his injuries.
Police launched an intensive investigation following the shooting, reviewing surveillance footage, gathering witness statements, and tracking movements connected to the suspects involved.
Authorities later arrested Heard and charged him with murder in connection with the deadly shootout. Investigators have not yet publicly released full details about what sparked the confrontation or whether additional suspects could face charges.
The shooting once again raised concerns about recurring violence involving large gatherings around Atlantic Station, an area that has dealt with multiple high-profile shootings and security incidents in recent years.
Police say the investigation remains active as detectives continue reviewing evidence surrounding the deadly gun battle.
