Chicago Man Charged in Fatal Shooting of Woman on Near West Side

CHICAGO — A Chicago man has been arrested and charged with fatally shooting a 33-year-old woman last Thursday on the city’s Near West Side.

Johnnie Matthews, 42, faces charges of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to Chicago police.

Police say Matthews was arrested on Thursday after being identified as the suspect in the shooting, which occurred inside a home in the 1500 block of West Warren Boulevard. The victim, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the head.

Matthews is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing on Saturday as the investigation continues.
