18-Year-Old Charged with Murdering On-and-Off Girlfriend in Chicago

CHICAGO — An 18-year-old man with no prior criminal history has been charged with the murder of his on-and-off girlfriend, 19-year-old Belinda Fuentes Herrera. Prosecutors say Trevon Smith called 911 to turn himself in after the fatal shooting.

According to a statement from Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Pekara, Fuentes invited Smith to meet on January 16. The two had been seeing each other intermittently since 2022.

Fuentes picked Smith up in her car, and they headed toward her mother’s home. However, Smith reportedly asked her to stop in an alley in the 2000 block of West 47th Street, saying he wanted to get out. As he exited the car, he allegedly pulled out a gun and shot her multiple times. Fuentes’ car rolled about 50 feet down the alley before crashing.

A nearby witness reported hearing gunfire and seeing a man in black clothing and white shoes with his arm inside the vehicle but did not hear any arguing prior to the shooting, Pekara said.

Smith fled the scene, running through several yards before calling 911 to confess. Police located him minutes later, holding a 9-millimeter pistol and a phone. Officers instructed him to drop both, and he complied. Investigators recovered five shell casings at the scene that matched Smith’s weapon.

Smith has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held in custody without bail, per Judge Antara River’s ruling.

Fuentes, described as a kind and hardworking woman, was a manager and a devout churchgoer who attended services with her father every Sunday, according to a family member. “She hated anything that condoned gun violence,” wrote Veli Alonso in a GoFundMe campaign for her family. “She always made sure everyone was good before thinking of herself.”

Fuentes is survived by her parents, sister, and two younger brothers. The investigation remains ongoing.
