New Orleans Attack on New Year’s Day Leaves 10 Dead, Driver Confirmed Deceased

The FBI has confirmed that the driver responsible for the deadly New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans, which killed 10 people and injured around 35 others, is dead. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) had previously shared the news.

The tragedy unfolded at approximately 3:15 a.m. on Jan. 1, when a pickup truck plowed through a crowd on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. After the driver crashed, a shootout with police ensued, leaving two officers injured. Both officers are reported to be in stable condition.

The FBI released a statement describing the incident: “This morning, an individual drove a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing a number of people and injuring dozens of others. The subject then engaged with local law enforcement and is now deceased. The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism.”

This statement marked a shift from earlier remarks made during a press conference. At that time, FBI New Orleans Assistant Special Agent Alethea Duncan stated, “This is not a terrorist event. What it is right now is there are improvised explosive devices that were found, and we are working on confirming if this is a viable device or not.”

Superintendent Chief Anne Kirkpatrick of the NOPD emphasized the intentional nature of the attack. “This was very intentional behavior,” Kirkpatrick said. “This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could. It was not a DUI situation. This is more complex and serious based on the information we have.”

She highlighted the driver’s deliberate actions, explaining that the perpetrator bypassed barricades to carry out the attack. “He was hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage he did,” Kirkpatrick added.

Authorities have yet to release details about the suspect but have scheduled an update for 11 a.m. local time on Wednesday, Jan. 1.
