CHICAGO — An 18-year-old has been accused of fatally shooting an unarmed man without provocation at a West Side gas station on November 4. Judge Deidre Dyer ordered Deandre Johnson to remain in custody on a first-degree murder charge during a hearing on Monday.

In a statement provided by Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Pekara, prosecutors explained that Johnson’s mother asked a relative to drive him to the GoLo gas station at 3731 West Roosevelt Road around 10:50 a.m. that day.

The relative parked at one of the pumps while Johnson entered the store, had another customer purchase cigarillos for him, and then began walking back toward the car, according to Pekara.

Outside the gas station, Johnson encountered 20-year-old Rayjay James. Johnson allegedly asked James, “What the f*** you looking at?” before both men continued walking. As James opened the gas station door, Johnson reportedly drew a gun from his waistband, turned around, assumed a shooting stance, and fired multiple shots. James was struck three times and collapsed inside the store.

After the shooting, Johnson allegedly ran to his relative’s car, got into the passenger seat, and told her to drive him home. A Chicago police officer in uniform, stationed across from the gas station, witnessed the incident. On the way to Johnson’s residence, the relative’s car turned directly in front of the officer’s squad car. The officer followed the vehicle to Johnson’s home, located three blocks away. Johnson fled into his apartment building, and police did not apprehend him at that time, Pekara said.

Surveillance footage captured the events from several angles, with Johnson’s face clearly visible, according to Pekara. The relative who drove him, Johnson’s mother, and a representative from a school Johnson attended all identified him from the surveillance images.

Johnson is currently on juvenile probation for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and has previous delinquency adjudications for burglary and resisting a peace officer earlier this year, Pekara said.
