CHICAGO — Accused Robber and Fleeing Driver Faces Multiple Charges After Armed Robbery and Stolen Car Pursuit
Lindsey Hughes, who was previously accused of intentionally hitting a bicyclist on the Lakefront Trail, is now facing more serious charges. This time, prosecutors are pushing for her detention after she allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint in Logan Square and fled from police in a stolen vehicle that may have been linked to a murder earlier that day.
At about 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a 30-year-old man reported to police that he was walking in the 2100 block of North Whipple when a silver sedan, possibly a Kia, pulled up. The man told authorities that a passenger in the car displayed a gun and took his property before getting back into the car, which was driven by a woman.
Later, around 3 p.m., a Chicago police tactical unit spotted a car matching the description of a vehicle used in a murder that occurred earlier in the day. The murder happened around 11:35 a.m. at Sanford Foods at 501 North Laramie, where 32-year-old Armontye Alexander was shot and killed by suspects who then fled the scene.
The police tried to pull over the car, but the driver sped away, eventually crashing into an unmarked squad car. Prosecutors say Hughes was the driver of the stolen vehicle, which had been reported stolen that morning. The car was identified as a silver Kia Rio with damage that matched the suspect vehicle in the murder.
Hughes was arrested after CPD investigators linked her to the robbery and the stolen vehicle through surveillance videos and phone GPS data. She allegedly made admissions to the robbery, though she is not currently accused of being involved in the murder.
She was charged with armed robbery, two counts of possessing a stolen vehicle, and criminal damage to government property.
Additionally, Hughes was already on pretrial release for a violent offense related to a Lakefront Trail incident last September, where she allegedly attempted to run over a bicyclist and ultimately succeeded in hitting him. Prosecutors did not request her detention at that time, but the new charges led Judge Antara Rivera to grant the request to keep her in jail pending trial, citing her history of violent offenses.
