Detroit Men Charged In 2022 Killing Of Missing 15-Year-Old Berkley Girl

Two Detroit men are now facing first-degree murder charges in the 2022 killing of 15-year-old Janiya Brown, a Berkley girl who was missing for more than two weeks before she was found shot to death on Detroit’s west side.

Authorities say Russell DeShawn-Deangelo McGilary, 23, was charged May 28 with first-degree murder and felony firearm. Andrew Angelo Walker, 22, was arraigned on the same charges Thursday, June 4. Both men were denied bond.

Janiya had been reported missing in April 2022. On May 11, 2022, she was found dead in an alley near Joy Road and Livernois Avenue with multiple gunshot wounds. Her body was discovered near a stolen Chevy Malibu that police said was tied to a carjacking reported two days earlier.

Investigators said Walker allegedly assaulted Janiya before he and McGilary shot her multiple times. Police also said Janiya had been considered a person of interest in the carjacking case, with investigators alleging she lured a 20-year-old she met online to a home on Clarita Avenue, where he was robbed and carjacked at gunpoint.

At the time, Janiya’s death shocked both Berkley and Detroit. Earlier reports said her body was found inside or near the Chevy Malibu in a Detroit alleyway, after her family had already spent weeks searching for her.

The case is now moving forward more than 4 years after her death. McGilary and Walker are scheduled for a probable cause conference on June 12. If convicted, both men could face life in prison.
