MEMPHIS — A man convicted in one of West Memphis’ most violent murder cases has been sentenced to three life sentences plus an additional 290 years after prosecutors proved he carried out a brutal series of killings that devastated multiple families.
The massive sentence was handed down to 31-year-old Cortez Hall following his conviction in the murders of three people during a deadly 2021 shooting rampage in West Memphis.
According to prosecutors, the violence unfolded on July 17, 2021, when gunfire erupted at a residence in the 300 block of South 13th Street. Police arrived to find a horrifying scene with multiple victims shot inside and outside the home.
Investigators said 30-year-old Justin Brown, 35-year-old Marquisha Hampton, and 17-year-old Jamal Carter were all killed during the attack. Several others were also injured as bullets tore through the residence and surrounding area.
Authorities described the shooting as targeted and extremely violent, saying Hall arrived armed and opened fire repeatedly during a confrontation connected to an ongoing dispute.
Witnesses told investigators the shooting happened quickly and left people scrambling for cover as shots echoed through the neighborhood. Officers recovered dozens of shell casings at the scene while detectives worked through surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence to identify the gunman.
During the trial, prosecutors presented ballistic evidence, phone records, and testimony linking Hall directly to the murders. Witnesses also described seeing him fleeing the area after the shooting.
The jury ultimately found Hall guilty on multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and several firearm-related charges.
Because multiple victims were killed and several others were injured during the attack, the sentencing stacked dramatically. The judge ordered Hall to serve three life sentences for the murders, plus another 290 years for the remaining charges tied to the shooting.
Family members of the victims filled the courtroom during sentencing. Several relatives gave emotional statements describing the pain the killings caused and the years of grief they have endured since losing loved ones in the massacre.
One family member reportedly told the court that no sentence would ever bring their loved ones back but said they were relieved Hall would never again walk free.
Prosecutors described the shooting as a senseless act of violence that tore apart families and traumatized the community.
The sentence ensures Hall will spend the rest of his life behind bars with no realistic chance of release.
