CHICAGO — A South Side man is facing attempted murder and weapons charges after police say he opened fire on Chicago officers during an investigatory stop earlier this week.
Authorities identified the suspect as 26-year-old Cordero Ramey. Police say the incident began Monday night around 10:35 p.m. after officers responded to a report of a person with a gun in the 8200 block of South Shore Drive.
Officers later spotted a man matching the suspect’s description in the 3100 block of East 83rd Street and tried to conduct an investigatory stop. According to police, the officers attempted to de-escalate the encounter and repeatedly ordered Ramey to keep his hands visible.
Investigators say Ramey then fired a shot toward the officers. Two officers returned fire, striking him.
After the shootout, officers immediately began rendering aid until Ramey was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition. No officers were struck by gunfire, but both were taken to a hospital for observation.
Police said they recovered a firearm and suspected narcotics after Ramey was taken into custody.
Ramey is now charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder. He also faces charges for unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender, and manufacture or delivery of between 15 and 100 grams of heroin.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the police use of force, along with the Chicago Police Department. Under department policy, the officers involved have been placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days while the investigation continues.
Ramey was scheduled for a detention hearing Thursday as prosecutors move forward with the case.
